A Simplified E1 Line Service Overview
The E1 line, is the European equivalent to the T1 line which is used mostly in the United States, Canada and Japan. The standard is an improved version of the T1 and is used in many countries throughout the world. Principally being used for voice and data transfers, the voice portion is divided into 32 time slots of 8 KHz each. The reason for this is that voice is recorded at 8 KHz. The maximum cap on bandwidth for the high speed transfer of data has been set at 2.048 Mb per second.
Because voice is recorded at 8 KHz, E1 circuits are well suited for this type of data transfer. High speed Internet traffic can be carried comfortably using this type of connection. Thirty separate phone calls may be carried simultaneously on the line. As the performance of the circuit may be affected by many phone calls, cognizance should be taken of the fact that about 60 Kb per second is lost for every phone call in operation during data transfers. This should be considered if contemplating installing an E1 line.
